"We Create Music" Gustavo Santaolalla & Paul Williams in Conversation

One is a pioneer of rock en español, with two Grammys and 14 Latin Grammys to his name, a futuristic tango band called Bajofondo, and a Golden Globe and back-to-back Oscars for his music to Brokeback Mountain and Babel. The other is a Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe-winning, Hall of Fame songwriter whose many classics have been recorded by the Carpenters, Barbra Streisand, Kermit the Frog and, most recently, Daft Punk for their Grammy-winning album Random Access Memories. While Gustavo Santaolalla and ASCAP President Paul Williams have traveled very different paths, they have both endured for decades by following their own muses. These two master music creators will discuss collaborating on the forthcoming animated film The Book of Life and the stage adaptation of Pan's Labyrinth, and reveal how they've stayed productive and creatively fulfilled, 40+ years into their careers.

Courage of His Konvictions: Master Session with Akon
With three best-selling albums, five Grammy nominations, 300+ guest appearances and dozens of songs on the Hot 100, writer-producer Akon is one of the most successful - and prolific - creators in urban music. He’s also got a remarkable story: how many people can say they split time between New Jersey and Senegal as a kid, wrote songs with Michael Jackson and earned a Guinness Book of World Records title as the top-selling ringtone artist in the world? Akon has gotten where he is because of incredible talent and a healthy dose of ambition. He’ll detail his rise to the top in this master session, and (hopefully) give us the scoop on his anticipated fourth album Stadium.

John Beasley can. This musical jack-of-all-trades has lived the life of ten musicians, composing, recording, touring, music directing and lecturing throughout his 30 years of professional music making. Beasley’s genre-crossing career has required both incredible talent and a willingness to wear many musical hats. The Lost Art of A&R with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis

There's nobody quite like writer-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Over an incredible 30-plus year career, the duo has revolutionized the sound of urban and pop radio, bringing together world-class musicianship with cutting-edge technology for iconic hits by Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Usher, Boyz II Men, Mary J. Blige, George Michael and dozens more. But it takes more than songwriting and production prowess to achieve what Jimmy and Terry have achieved. In a contemporary music market driven by canned beats and albums that sound more like singles collections, Jimmy and Terry insist on working closely with their artists to make sure every song has a purpose, and reflects the artist’s creative essence. In this revealing keynote panel, they’ll explain how they develop artists and create albums that stand the test of time.
